Precision Health and PGx Podcast
This podcast is all about the Pharmacist leveraging the power of Pharmacogenomics. PGX for Pharmacists is a member of the Pharmacy Podcast Network. Pharmacogenomics is the study of the role of the genome in drug response. Its name (pharmaco- + genomics) reflects its combining of pharmacology and genomics. Pharmacogenomics analyzes how the genetic makeup of an individual affects his/her response to drugs. It deals with the influence of acquired and inherited genetic variation on drug response in patients by correlating gene expression or single-nucleotide polymorphisms with pharmacokinetics (drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination) and pharmacodynamics (effects mediated through a drug’s biological targets).

PART TWO: Pharmacogenomics Education is critical to advancing the Pharmacist's optimal impact on medication management as a tool to ensure the drugs prescribed work as intended.
The State of the Industry -- Pharmacogenomics Education
Clinical pharmacogenomics activities may include designing patient-specific drug and dosage regimens based on genetic profile, documenting clinical recommendations, educating pharmacists and other health care professionals, and recommending testing
Advanced training in pharmacogenomics may open up more practice opportunities for pharmacists, such as developing clinical decision support tools in electronic health record systems that guide prescribers on appropriate drug therapy regimens based on genetic profiles. Additionally, pharmacists can develop institutional guidelines and processes for implementing clinical pharmacogenomics services into various practice settings.
Pharmacists can also develop patient education materials to explain the significance of the tests and serve as expert consultants in a pharmacogenomics service.

Dr. Jai Patel, PharmD, BCOP, CPP Chair of Department of Cancer Pharmacology & Pharmacogenomics Dr. Jai Patel is a pharmacist who help create a pharmacogenomics fellowship which was not available at his school. He finished the Oncology/Pharmacogenomics Postdoctoral Fellowship at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Patel: “I approached my mentor and said, ‘this is what I want to practice. I have the ambition and drive.’ I had to convince him I was a good investment. Just because something doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. That’s what will set you apart from others when trying to build something new. Health care is always changing. Position yourself to be in the forefront of medicine. Dr. Patel serves as Chair of the Department of Cancer Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics at Levine Cancer Institute. He is also the associate Professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Patel’s research focuses on translational and clinical pharmacogenomics and pharmacokinetics of anticancer therapies. Becky Winslow PharmD, of PGX for Pharmacists podcast, joins Eric Geyer PharmD in this mash-up 'Pharmacy Podcast' hybrid episode where we discuss not only the Plavix case but several other cases where pharmacogenomics could help make a huge difference in our healthcare system, including in how we treat opioid addiction.
Hawaii recently fined Bristol Myers Squibb and Sanofi under consumer protection standards for their drug Plavix (clopidogrel). This could be a game changing case due to the fact that it could have been prevented with more studies using pharmacogenomics.
Special insert from KHON2 News with Hawaii Attorney General Clare Connors held a news conference on Tuesday to discuss the million-dollar lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Sanofi.

Becky Winslow, PharmD & Pharmacy Student Kaitlyn Marshall re-launch the PGX for Pharmacists.
23andMe announced in August of 2020 that it has received a 510(k) clearance from the FDA that allows its direct-to-consumer personal pharmacogenetics report to guide use of two treatments without the need for confirmatory testing.
This action updates a De Novo approval granted to the consumer genomics company in late 2018. That decision allowed 23andMe to market a test for one of 33 variants across multiple genes that could impact metabolization of certain medication, but came with a handful of "special controls." Among these were labeling requirements that warned consumers not to use the product for any medication decisions without additional independent testing.
