Precision Health and PGx Podcast

This podcast is all about the Pharmacist leveraging the power of Pharmacogenomics. PGX for Pharmacists is a member of the Pharmacy Podcast Network. Pharmacogenomics is the study of the role of the genome in drug response. Its name (pharmaco- + genomics) reflects its combining of pharmacology and genomics. Pharmacogenomics analyzes how the genetic makeup of an individual affects his/her response to drugs. It deals with the influence of acquired and inherited genetic variation on drug response in patients by correlating gene expression or single-nucleotide polymorphisms with pharmacokinetics (drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination) and pharmacodynamics (effects mediated through a drug’s biological targets).

ALVA10: the Power of Diagnostics
Have you ever questioned why a payer pays for a medication, yet does not pay for the diagnostic test to determine if the medication will be efficacious and non-toxic for the patient?
Or perhaps, you may have wondered why payers agree to pay for a medication for which no diagnostic test exists to diagnose the condition the medication treats?
If these types of questions keep you awake at night like they do me, please join me for this podcast episode in which I and my esteemed colleagues, Hannah Mamuszka and Lena Chaihorsky of Alva10 discuss answers to these questions and the general state of the pharmacogenomics market access and reimbursement landscape.
Lena Chaihorsky & Hannah Mamuszka join Dr. Becky Winslow to discuss diagnostic testing and the preventative savings for PGX testing for patients on multiple medications.

PART TWO: Pharmacogenomics Education is critical to advancing the Pharmacist's optimal impact on medication management as a tool to ensure the drugs prescribed work as intended.
The State of the Industry -- Pharmacogenomics Education
Clinical pharmacogenomics activities may include designing patient-specific drug and dosage regimens based on genetic profile, documenting clinical recommendations, educating pharmacists and other health care professionals, and recommending testing
Advanced training in pharmacogenomics may open up more practice opportunities for pharmacists, such as developing clinical decision support tools in electronic health record systems that guide prescribers on appropriate drug therapy regimens based on genetic profiles. Additionally, pharmacists can develop institutional guidelines and processes for implementing clinical pharmacogenomics services into various practice settings.
Pharmacists can also develop patient education materials to explain the significance of the tests and serve as expert consultants in a pharmacogenomics service.
Special guest: David Hurley PhD.
David Hurley grew up in Dunwoody, GA, then earned a BS in Biology and Physics from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, in 1979. He received his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Penn State University in 1986. He joined the faculty in Cell and Molecular Biology at Tulane University in New Orleans in 1992. He developed "Cellular Biochemistry" as a senior-level course for premedical students, while maintaining a research focus on the regulation of gene transcription of the Growth Hormone gene in the pituitary. Dr Hurley was an National Science Foundation CAREER program awardee from 1996-2004, and was co-investigator on a National Institutes of Health grant for 17 years. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, he joined the Gatton School of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University as an inaugural faculty member in July, 2007, as Professor and Vice-Chair in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Jai Patel, PharmD, BCOP, CPP Chair of Department of Cancer Pharmacology & Pharmacogenomics Dr. Jai Patel is a pharmacist who help create a pharmacogenomics fellowship which was not available at his school. He finished the Oncology/Pharmacogenomics Postdoctoral Fellowship at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Patel: “I approached my mentor and said, ‘this is what I want to practice. I have the ambition and drive.’ I had to convince him I was a good investment. Just because something doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. That’s what will set you apart from others when trying to build something new. Health care is always changing. Position yourself to be in the forefront of medicine. Dr. Patel serves as Chair of the Department of Cancer Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics at Levine Cancer Institute. He is also the associate Professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Patel’s research focuses on translational and clinical pharmacogenomics and pharmacokinetics of anticancer therapies.  Behnaz Sarrami, MS, PharmD Pharmacogenomics (PGx) coach and consultant | MSL at Atheadx Behnaz Sarrami is the co-host to the PGx for Pharmacist Podcast.
